The caves of Ariège

Located between the Ariège plain and the Pyrenean foothills, 09 is dotted with prehistoric shelters. Want to go back in time to prehistory? Focus on the main caves of Ariège:

  • Cave de Niaux (10 km from the campsite): A camping trip near the Niaux Cave will allow you to observe bison, horses and other animals depicted during the Upper Paleolithic, about 15,000 years ago. A beautiful sample of parietal art in a set of galleries 8 km long, in the heart of the Vicdessos Valley.
  • Cave of the Cow (10 km from the campsite): This cavity located in the commune of Alliat and listed as a historical monument welcomes nearly 1,000 visitors a year. It belongs to the network of “Ariégeois Tourist Sites”. High-value bone remains were found during the excavations.
  • Bédeilhac Cave (20 km from the campsite): Head north to Tarascon-sur-Ariège to a cave decorated more than 2 km long, accessible by a 40 m wide opening.
  • Lombrives Cave (15 km from the campsite): Take a 10-minute drive from our campsite near the Lombrives cave to visit the public part of this 7 km long gallery complex.
  • Labouiche Underground River (40 km from the campsite): a magnificent prehistoric site near Foix discovered in 1908, where weapons and tools dating from the Paleolithic were found

Auzat

Foix Castle
